Freemasons from Ballarat’s Guiding Star Lodge have helped raise $3300 for 12 lightweight wheelchairs for Ballarat Hospice Care.

Ballarat Hospice Care executive officer Carita Clancy said the wheelchairs will be used to help carers transport their loved ones from home to medical appointments in a much easier manner.

“The role of a carer is invaluable and part of what we do here at Ballarat Hospice Care is support carers too so that they can care for their loved ones in their own home,” Ms Clancy said.

“Carers regularly transport patients to and from various health service providers and, with equipment that is modern and lightweight, they can do this more confidently. These 12 new chairs are now available via our equipment loan service and we know they’ll make a huge difference to a lot of peoples’ lives.”

“We acknowledge that carers have their own needs within and beyond the caring role, and we provide a comprehensive education program which shares practical information about palliative care and the caring role. As well as practical information and advice, we also provide important equipment, such as wheelchairs.”

Lodge Master Peter Bond said the funds were raised through barbecues and member donations, while Freemasons Foundation Victoria Ltd also matched the Ballarat donation dollar for dollar.

“Our members had talked about how satisfying it would be to know our donation might buy two or three chairs but to hear that our efforts have allowed for 12 new chairs is just tremendous,” Mr Bond said.

“Our local Lodge fundraises throughout the year for a number of causes and we’re delighted to have learnt more about Ballarat Hospice Care and the important service they provide to the community.”

Ms Clancy said Ballarat Hospice Care provides palliative care to people living in Ballarat, Hepburn, north west Golden Plains and north Moorabool shires.

“However, our service is located in a facility that is small and compromises our ability to meet the current demand for in-home palliative care. Right now, we’re working to raise $1 million via our Give to Help Hospice Grow campaign; a capital building fund campaign that will allow us to purchase land to move towards the construction of a multipurpose building that will become a regional hub for specialist palliative care.”
