COMPASSION, INGENUITY AND KINDNESS DURING COVID19

News,Our Stories

Ballarat Hospice Care is the grateful recipient of funds raised by the Rotary Club of Ballarat West Facebook page promoted by Mrs. Christina Gollam, her husband Steve and Mrs. Sue Simmonds.

From a full time carer of her elderly father 18 months ago, Mrs. Gollam has transformed herself into a community fund raising dynamo during the COVID19 pandemic with the support of her husband and Mrs. Simmonds.

Mrs. Gollam cared for her father at home until his death. To cope with her grief and loss, Mrs. Gollam began volunteering at a local Op Shop. She was surprised by how much she enjoyed connecting with others through the Op Shop.

When the pandemic forced the closure of the Op Shop, Mrs. Gollam thought she could take the work online. She has been delighted by the support received from the Ballarat community since then.

Working under the banner of the Rotary Club of Ballarat West, the trio receives donations from across Ballarat. The items are collected, sold online, packaged and sent off. All money raised is donated to local Ballarat charities through the Rotary Club.

Ballarat Hospice Care CEO, Mrs. Carita Clancy said “This is a wonderful example of compassion, ingenuity and kindness.

“We are delighted to be a recipient of funds donated by the group. We have plans to purchase a special cushion that will bring comfort to patients while they are cared for in their own home.

“We work hard to ensure funds are available to purchase equipment for loan so people can stay at home for their end of life care in line with their wishes.

“The support we receive from our local community extends and supports our care.”

Mrs. Gollam commented “It has been so very busy, however we gain so much by what we are doing. Many of our donors and buyers are enjoying the virtual and real connections they are making through the interactions and we welcome more people to follow the page.

“I have been inspired by the Ballarat community who are keen to support local charities. One thing they all want to know is “Where does the money go and what have we contributed to?”  We are all satisfied to know who we are supporting and how it helps others in our community. ”
