National Advance Care Planning Week | 16–22 March 2026
Every one of us has a story – shaped by experiences, values, and relationships. But when it comes to healthcare, how often do we pause to think about what really matters and the choices we would want for our future?
That’s where advance care planning comes in. National Advance Care Planning Week is a reminder to reflect on what matters most to you and how you would like to be cared for.
What is advance care planning?
Advance care planning is about thinking ahead and sharing your preferences for future healthcare. It includes:
- Reflecting on your values, beliefs and what quality of life means to you
- Talking with family members, trusted friends or your healthcare providers
- Writing down your wishes so they are clear and can be followed
It ensures the people caring for you – loved ones and healthcare professionals – understand what matters most.
Advanced care planning is not just for older people or those living with illness. It is something every adult can consider.
Why does Advance Care Planning matter?
Without a clear plan, families can be left making difficult decisions during stressful times. Advance care planning can:
- Reduce uncertainty and confusion
- Give your loved ones confidence in decision-making
- Help healthcare professionals provide care that reflects your wishes
- Provide you with peace of mind
Planning ahead is a way of looking after yourself and those you care about.
How can you find out more?

Advance Care Planning is not about expecting the worst – it’s about making your wishes clear, giving your loved ones peace of mind, and ensuring your choices are respected.
