THE MEANING OF OUR VELVET HEARTS

Our Stories
Velvet Hearts

At Ballarat Hospice Care, our velvet hearts serve as a powerful symbol of love and comfort for those grieving.

Inspired by Rachel Remen’s touching story of a young girl named Kimmy, these hearts provide solace and a sense of connection. Kimmy, who lost her mother, found comfort in a small heart given to her by Bridges, a bereavement centre in Tacoma, Washington. Her father called it a “feely heart,” a tangible source of solace she carried everywhere.

We introduced these velvet hearts at Ballarat Hospice Care after discovering their profound impact. Our dedicated volunteers, many of whom are widowed, handcraft each heart from soft velour or velvet. These hearts are unique and made with love and care, embodying the compassion we strive to offer.

The therapeutic value of these hearts is immense. They offer a comforting presence during moments of overwhelming grief, becoming an essential part of the healing process. Children and adults alike find solace in their softness, often sharing their hearts with others in need.

For those who mourn, simple and accessible comforts are often the most profound. Our velvet hearts provide a small yet significant source of solace, helping individuals connect with their loss and heal. Knowing how much these hearts mean to those who receive them is deeply gratifying for our volunteers.
