Community Engagement Manager (2022 - 2025) & Family member

My connection with Ballarat Hospice Care began long before I joined the team. When I first moved to Ballarat and worked in health, I heard about the great work they were doing. I got to know the former CEO, who spoke highly of the organisation. Later, I had the opportunity to apply for a community engagement role at Ballarat Hospice Care, and I was excited to join the team.

It wasn’t until my father’s health declined that I saw hospice care from the other side – firsthand as a family member. When my dad’s condition worsened, we transferred his care to Ballarat Hospice Care. We received the most incredible support from the team. Every visit, whether to deliver equipment or offer care, felt like they had our backs. It gave us such peace of mind.

For me, “wrap-around care” perfectly captures what Ballarat Hospice Care offers. It’s not just about the care provided during the illness, but the full spectrum – before, during, and after. We were empowered to care for Dad, while also offering support when we needed it. It was a gift, knowing we were supported every step of the way.

The message I want to share about palliative care is simple: don’t be afraid to learn about it. Have those conversations with your family early, and know what you and your loved ones want. It makes a tough time easier when you’ve already had those important discussions. And if you can, support palliative care services. We need them, and they make a real difference in families’ lives.

Ballarat Hospice Care has been part of our community for 40 years, and we are incredibly fortunate to have it. I encourage everyone to learn more and support it. It’s an invaluable resource, and we need to make sure it continues for years to come.
