Carita Clancy

CEO (2007 – 2022)

I had the privilege of leading Ballarat Hospice Care as CEO from 2007 to 2022. During my time here, I helped guide the organisation through a period of growth, change, and professional development. What began as a small community service evolved into a leading palliative care organisation respected across the Grampians region and the state.

My background is in nursing, with a passion for cancer and palliative care. That passion was sparked early when, as a 19-year-old student nurse, I cared for someone who was dying. I didn’t fully understand what was happening, but I knew it wasn’t right – and I knew I wanted to do better. That experience stayed with me and led me to a career focused on end-of-life care.

Ballarat Hospice Care has always stood for trust and reliability. We did what we said we would do, and the community knew they could count on us. As CEO, I worked alongside incredible people – staff, volunteers, board members – who shared a commitment to honesty, compassion, and quality care.

For me, palliative care is about listening to patients, to families, to carers. It’s about being flexible, acknowledging that dying is as hard and complex as living, and recognising that everyone involved – patients, families, carers, volunteers, and staff – will have good days and bad days.

I believe the best palliative care creates a space where people feel safe, loved, and supported. If I were ever facing the end of my life, I would want palliative care to be part of my journey – offering choice, dignity, and quality time with those I love.

Every day at Ballarat Hospice Care was a gift. I was reminded daily of how fragile life is and how important it is to treasure each moment.

Ballarat Hospice Care may be small, but it is mighty. Since 1984, we’ve built a strong reputation based on honesty, trust, and delivering what we promise: outstanding palliative care that helps people feel safe and supported, most often in the comfort of their own home.

Our doors have always been open. Thanks to the amazing staff, volunteers, and ongoing community support, we have continued to make a real difference in people’s lives. I feel incredibly proud to have been part of this journey.
