I’ve been with Ballarat Hospice for almost three years, working as a supportive care advisor. With a background in social work, I work closely with a small team to support patients, helping them identify what’s important and what living well means to them. We help with both the emotional and practical aspects of their lives, including planning for end-of-life care when they’re ready to discuss it.
Quality of life means different things for everyone, and it’s about helping people adjust to their changing circumstances. Our role is to help people still find joy and purpose in their daily lives.
Another major part of our work is supporting carers – families and friends caring for loved ones with life-limiting illnesses. Our team is there for them, providing practical support and emotional reassurance. After a loss, we also provide bereavement support over 12 months, ensuring families have the help they need during that difficult time.
Ballarat Hospice Care is a joyful place to work, despite the nature of the work. There’s a lot of life shared with patients, and the staff here bring a sense of joy through the care we provide. The environment is calming, with a beautiful garden where we can reflect and enjoy peaceful moments together.
What inspired me to work here was my curiosity about supporting people at the end of life and being part of a team that helps demystify death. We offer families and patients the opportunity to navigate this phase of life with dignity, focusing on the person, not just the illness.
Our role in the community is vital as we’re the only service in the area offering support for people to die at home. We’re here for everyone, inclusive and accessible, and we’re a hub for information and support.
