Family member & Volunteer

I’ve been a volunteer with Ballarat Hospice Care for over 21 years now – it’s been a big part of my life.

I’ve seen Ballarat Hospice Care from both sides – as a family member when my wife was terminally ill, and as a volunteer. When we needed them, Ballarat Hospice Care was there every day, supporting us through a very difficult time. Their help made such a difference – not just for my wife, but for our whole family.

As a volunteer, it’s given me a real sense of purpose. I first got involved wanting to give something back. We reformed the Friends of Hospice group and did a lot of fundraising before the Op Shop was established. Over the years, I’ve helped out with things like fundraising, banking, cleaning vehicles, and now some admin — just lending a hand where I can.

If I had to describe Ballarat Hospice Care in a phrase, I’d say: “turning your home into a hospital.” They make it possible for patients to stay in their own homes, surrounded by family, pets, and their garden, instead of sitting in a hospital ward.

Palliative care isn’t something to be afraid of. It’s not just for cancer patients — it’s there for anyone with a terminal illness. And it’s free. More than anything, it gives families the support they need at one of the hardest times in their lives.

Being part of Ballarat Hospice Care is like being part of a big, happy family. I’ve loved every minute of it.
