Family member & Volunteer

My experience with Ballarat Hospice Care began when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. I hadn’t heard of hospice before, but when they came into our lives, it made all the difference – not just for my husband, but for me too. Whenever something went wrong, especially at night or on weekends, it was such a relief to know I could call someone for support. The social workers were there to talk to me, and the volunteers gave me breaks so I could recharge. That support meant so much during a very tough time.

If I had to describe Ballarat Hospice Care in one word, I’d say amazing. They’re there for both the patient and the family, providing comfort and care in ways you can’t imagine.

After my husband passed, I wanted to give back, so I began volunteering in the Ballarat Hospice Care Op Shop. It’s a wonderful place with great people, and I’m happy to contribute, even in a small way, to the work Hospice does.

One memorable moment at the Op Shop was when a lady struggling with cancer came in and needed someone to talk to. It’s moments like those that show the true value of Hospice – supporting not just the patient, but the family too.

I want people to know that hospice services like Ballarat Hospice Care are vital. I didn’t know about them before, but they truly helped us, and I think more people need to be aware of what they offer.

I’m grateful for the help Ballarat Hospice Care provided to my family and for the opportunity to give back by volunteering at the Op Shop.
