Honouring the Life and Legacy of The Honourable Rob Knowles AO
It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our Patron, the Honourable Rob Knowles AO—an outstanding leader and a tireless advocate for palliative care in Ballarat and across the region.
Rob’s connection to Ballarat Hospice Care Inc. spanned decades. When he was appointed Victoria’s Minister for Aged Care in 1992, he recognised the need for a coordinated framework and consistent support for palliative care. At a time when services were still developing, he played a pivotal role in shaping their future.
Throughout the 1990s, Rob championed dedicated funding and helped to establish community and palliative care services in regional centres. His advocacy strengthened access to care and supported the growth of services that continue to benefit our community today.
More than policy, Rob understood the human importance of palliative care. He was a strong and enduring voice for dignity, compassion and quality care at the end of life—values that remain central to our work.
Appointed Patron of Ballarat Hospice Care Inc. in 2014, Rob continued to provide valued leadership and unwavering support. His insight, guidance and commitment have left a lasting mark on our organisation and the community we serve.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
He will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
